Rev. Susan Arnold, Co-Pastor

Susan’s passion is preaching and helping people match their God-given gifts with opportunities to serve.  A graduate of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, she is nearing the end of a Doctorate of Ministry program with an emphasis on preaching from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.  She loves running, cooking, yardwork, good books, good movies and good coffee. Susan teaches the Brown Bag Bible Study on Thursday mornings and is a staff resource person to the Worship Committee, Diaconate, Stewardship and Finance Committee, and the Personnel Committee.

Rev. John Arnold, Co-Pastor

 

John’s ministry passion is finding practical ways to help people grow in their faith.  To learn more about that, check out John’s blog, The Practical Disciple.   He enjoys technology, so you can also find him on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.  When John pulls his head out of a computer he loves working with our youth, preaching, and teaching on Wednesday evening at our weekly Family Night Suppers.  Lastly, John has been an avid mentor of outdoor wilderness skills and is striving to pioneer outdoor ministries to help connect people more deeply to God through the beauty of God’s creation.  A graduate of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, John is a resource staff person for our Mission Committee, Evangelism Committee, Property Committee and Personnel Committee.

                                                                                       Dr. Jim Spirup - Music Director/Organist

 

 

Jim Spirup is the newest member of the FPC staff, joining in July of 2009.  Born in the San Francisco Bay Area, he has worked for the church as an organist and/or choirmaster since he was about fifteen years old.  After receiving a Bachelor of Music/Music Education from The College of Idaho, followed by a Masters in Reading Education in 1985, Jim taught school in Idaho for sixteen years, all the while working in the church as an organist. In 1994 and 1995 respectively, he completed a Masters and a Doctorate in Church Music from the University of Michigan.  He has been a full-time Director of Music Ministries/Organist for about twelve years now.  

Jim and his wife, Sue, who is also a music educator, have a daughter, Helen, who will enter Wake Forest University this fall to begin studies in chemical engineering.  They are moving to Texarkana from Abingdon, Virginia, having lived previously in South Carolina, Wisconsin and the Pacific Northwest.

Jane Portis, Youth Director/Christian Education Coordinator

Jane Portis joined us in January 2004. She works with the youth and helps provide for their spiritual development in the reformed faith through study, mission, fellowship, and fun. Jane also provides curriculum support, resources and training for our Sunday School programs.

Jane received her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's William H. Bowen School of Law. She has earned a Certificate in Youth and Theology from Princeton Seminary.  Her undergraduate studies were performed at Texas A&M University at Texarkana, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in History and Sociology.

Jane has one daughter, Laura Davis.

                                                             Patricia Thomas, Office Manager
 
Patricia L. Thomas joined the Church staff as Office Manager in June, 2005. She has over 15 years experience as a legal assistant. She was a graduate of Ashdown High School in 1985.  She then attended Texarkana Community College and received an Associates Degree in Secretarial Science. She and her husband Ray have one daughter, Ashley.

Ron Cantu, Custodian

Ron was born in Hale Center, Texas but has lived in Lubbock, Texas, New Mexico, and Toledo, Ohio. At the age of 11 his family moved to Hollister, California for four years before settling in Arizona. Ron, his wife, two sons and two daughters moved to the Texarkana area eleven years ago.

Ron has been associated with this church since February of 1997. He immediately amazed members of the congregation with his ability to remember everyone's name! From his previous work experiences, Ron has brought invaluable skills which contribute greatly to his ability to care for the church facilities. His good attitude, friendliness and humor are most appreciated.

  


 

 

Blanche Barber, Nursery Staff

 Blanche Barber has enjoyed working with the children in the church nursery for the past year. She and her daughter live in Malta, Texas. Her full time employment is with Stanhope's Art and Gift Emporium where she has worked for several years. Blanche enjoys reading and art.

 

 

 

 

 

  


 
Shelia Cannon, Nursery Staff

Shelia Cannon is the church's veteran nursery attendant. She never fails to tell us how much she loves children and enjoys her job. Her other loves include music, mostly Jazz and Blues, books and puzzle books. Shelia lives in Texarkana with her mother and stepfather. She also has a brother who lives in California.
